First Grade

A to Z Project

After reading Compost Stew: An A-Z Recipe for the Earth, the first grade students were challenged to create an Alphabet A-Z book on a topic of their choice. The students wrote a page for each letter A-Z and included an illustration. They shared their books with their classmates by posting a video reading their book on the educational app Flipgrid. They wrote their books on a variety of topics including making tacos, Mario, animals, going on vacation, dinosaurs, Pokemon, and more.

First Grade Math

First grade finished a math unit on measurement. They completed many different at home measurement activities. They compared lengths and ordered objects from shortest to longest. They also estimated and measured the lengths of items they found around their house with non-standard measurement units such as Legos, pencils, and toy cars.

Rainbows

The first grade students learned all about rainbows. They listened to the book How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow by Monica Sweeney read aloud. They watched a Mystery Doug video on how rainbows are formed in the sky and tried making their own rainbows using a glass and sunlight. They also performed a Grow Your Own Rainbow experiment using markers, paper towels, and two cups of water.

After the announcement of schools remaining closed and the continuation of distance learning for the rest of the school year, I decided to surprise the first grade students. The first graders received a yard sign as well as a note telling them I missed them.
